“1748″ is a missional community house associated with Chi Alpha Campus Ministries and the “PDX Community Group” our Tuesday evening home group of young adults that mostly go to Imago, The Well, Fathers House, Portland Christian Center and others. Our ministry specializes in serving Portland’s single young adult student and early graduate community, so generally our housemates are 20-early 30′s.
We usually have between 7-10 women sharing our huge 4 floor home– 9 rooms, 3 1/2 baths, 1 1/2 kitchens, 2 living areas, laundry room, a small secluded backyard, patio and fire pit. The house is generally pretty quiet even though you have a lot of freedom to have friends over etc. Our basement was recently renovated– all 3 rooms downstairs have large windows now, and a mostly private living space with partial kitchen and laundry room.
We try to have a mix of residents including international students or graduates from PSU and area campuses, and usually at least a couple from outside Christian worldview. Since 1992 more than 50 international students from 18 countries have been part of our community!All our Christian residents are very missionally minded, committed to Christian Community locally and active in demonstrating faith in our city and neighborhood.
Our house is located on the outside edge of Ladd’s Addition just 3 blocks off Hawthorne, inner SE Portland.
GETTING AROUND: We are directly on the #70, 3 blocks from #14 & #10, and 6 blocks from #4 bus lines. Most of us walk or bike back and forth to downtown Portland and PSU daily. Within a 5 minute walk you’ll find: Tiny’s Burgerville, Dancing Bean, Juniors (next door), Genies, Cash and Carry (groceries), Palio etc. In ten minutes you are at New Seasons & all the inner SE Division and lower Hawthorne shops. Within 15 minutes, you’ll be at Safeway and upper Hawthorne, or the Willamette River Eastside Esplanade, Montage, Doug Fir, The Drum Circle, skate park etc.
IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS! Enjoying a sunny morning on the back deck with a fresh French Press or Espresso before walking through our beautiful Ladds Addition Rose Gardens. Our house coffee, tea & barista station are on 24/7, usually with awesome coffees & teas available. During good weather grill some fresh veggies on our gas BBQ! You’re always invited to any of the parties or events going on.All rooms but one have active expanded basic cable connections (ch 2-99) and several high speed wireless access points throughout the house. If you have a computer we’ll even provide free antivirus and firewall protection while you live here– isn’t that cool! You’ll enjoy the benefits of having a house-Dad that is pretty tech savvy– it’s like your own live in “help line!” We have a 52″ flat screen available in our main community space. A laundry room in available to residents at no additional cost. You don’t even need to worry about the TP!
On a personal level– Kathy and Vic have given more than 20 years mentoring and coaching students & young adults, so you get take advantage of that if you choose– Yay!
THE NITTY GRITTY: No pets, no smoking and we live in an alcohol free environment (however we understand occasions when guests may bring a wine etc. in). Cooking is all independent. We do one house meeting/community meal a month. Everyone needs to help out with at least one housekeeping task weekly. A house phone is not available, so you will need your own cellphone service.
We require 30-day notification before moving out so we don’t have to charge you for last month’s rent.
