Day and Night II - Night Demon (1909)

Ciurlionis wrote of a time when a dark angel began tormenting him, leading to fear of the night which resulted in insomnia weakening him to the point of illness and eventual death in 1911. Diptych I - Prelude (1908)
Diptych 2 - Fugue

Ciurlionis sought to unite music with art becoming one of the first artists to utilize multi-media in some of his presentations. Some were started but never completed. Enchanted City I - Capricorn Enchanted City II - Morning
Eternity Evening (1904-5) Faces
Fairy Tale - Kings

This is one of my favorites. The folk beliefs of Lithuanians always identified the forests as a place of darkness controlled by princes, princesses, kings and queens.

Here if you look closely you see the two kings controlling the Fantasy, a Composition (1904-5) Faun

Look closely to see the dark eyes of the flute player who appears to be casting a spell in music over the faun.
Friendship (1906-7) Sagitarius - From Signs of the Zodiac The Belfry - From Cycle of the Spring

Description: These are some of the most famous works of M.K. Ciurlionis. His style could be called symbolist though there is discussion in the art world with some calling it impressionistic. It almost always includes metaphysical expressions of spirituality mostly derived from traditional Lithuanian folk tradition. His paintings are almost all done in tempera on very fragile media.During the 20th Century his entire collection was nationalized by Stalin and is now housed in the M.K. Ciurlionis Museum, Kaunas, Lithuania.
