June 29th, 140 students, associates (community volunteers) and staff left Portland State for the 40 mile drive to Guy Talbot State Park on the Historic Columbia Gorge Highway. We gathered under a cooking shelter until the rain stopped-- in Oregon, most years rain is common anytime up to about July 5th, so we're all used to it. Once the rain stopped everyone started to venture out, kick soccer balls around, throw frisbees etc.
New friends share information about their homes, what they are studying... A Portland area church put on a baked potato bar. Food makes us all smile
Herb (right) is instructing Kevin about something. Students started heading up from our shelter to a trail into the woods. This part of the Columbia Gorge is a transitional zone and because of the mountains tends to draw more rain. It almost looks like a rain forest here, but it really isn't. Still the foliage is lush and green.
We walked under the old highway trestle of the original Columbia River Highway built back during the Depression. The Highway was the first national highway and was built expressly allow people to come visit the incredible scenery. Lush temperate forest ferns lined the trail. Then we emerged into a bowl with the beautiful LaTourelle Falls. The Columbia Gorge per capita has the largest number of water falls in the USA.
The girls stop before crossing the stream. The Falls drops about 200 feet over a basalt volcanic flow that features beautiful geometric patterns This is an awesome spot for friends to have photos taken together

Description: June 29, 2007 our FOCUS picnic group went to Guy Talbot State Park near LaTourelle Falls on the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Highway. It was a typical Oregon picnic with rain for the first bit. After we all ate, the rain stopped and cleared enough to hike to the Falls. About 140 students came out.
Location: Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area
